Callback Films - Callie Che's A2 Media Evaluation

Title
I have developed forms and conventions of real media products by animating my title. Film titles are important because they provide an instant synopsis of a film which the audience uses to judge whether or not to watch the film. Hence, it is crucial to have a title that automatically appeals to the correct audience. My title, "Hidden", refers to the hidden object of a key, this introduces the drama genre while the visual content of special effects introduces the fantasy element. By animating my title, I have developed the conventions of real media products by adding motion rather than using a static title. I have also developed conventions by giving the title a deeper meaning and connecting it to the main focus of my production. For my title, I used a white serif font with a grey mist background, I edited opacity and positioning of my title and its background until I was able to create an animation that suited the title and complemented the production.

Me!
In my production, I used a hybrid genre of drama/fantasy. A genre is useful in categorising the overarching plots in a film and can be used by the audience to quickly select the type of film that they wish to watch. The drama genre is often more serious than humorous and the fantasy drama usually alludes to the presence of the supernatural or a supernatural or superhuman being. I have further developed this genre by using a soundtrack that incorporates music fitting to a horror genre. This creates an even more serious tone and adds tension to the plot which emphasises the storyline. By developing my genre, I have created a more intense tone which exaggerates the binary opposites of protagonist versus antagonist (Carlisle versus Morton). This adds a suspenseful element to the hybrid genre which may appeal to a wider audience, creating more general interest.
Representation
Representation is used throughout the film industry in a variety of ways, most commonly to portray characters a certain way. This can be done through various methods, for example, personality traits can be represented through actions and status can be represented through costume. I have developed representation by portraying the antagonist as a high-status individual who shows violence and desperation. This develops conventions because high-status characters are often conveyed as limitless due to an abundance of power and wealth. However, I have still kept some conventions since my characters still use the common symbols of wealth and power based on their surroundings and costume to represent their status.
