Throughout the creation of my main product, I conducted several surveys to collect the opinion of my target audience. This allowed me to alter my product according to suggested improvements which made my final product better targeted to my audience.

Title Design

I created and conducted a survey prior to making my final title sequence so I would be able to analyse my audience's expectations and adjust my work accordingly. For my title design, I collected opinions on the style and form of my title. For example, I gave the audience a choice between three fonts to see which best appealed to my target audience. I then used the font that the majority of the audience preferred in my final trailer. I also asked open questions which asked for any further suggested opinions so I could analyse what else my audience thought could be improved. One suggestion involved making the title appear to flicker between layers of mist which I then applied in Adobe After Effects by adding another layer of the mist image and lowering the opacity of the text. By conducting a survey, I was able to generate opinions about what my target audience thought matched my trailer regarding the title. From this audience feedback, I was able to create pie charts to show the data I collected which can be seen in the above PowerPoint. This allows me to have a quick overview of my audience's opinion and assess their reactions to specific fonts and styles in my title.

Rough Cut

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

While I was creating my trailer, I continuously saved my unfinished work. Midway through editing my production, I saved a copy of my work as a rough cut to analyse my audience's reaction towards the trailer as it appeared so far. Using this rough cut, I created a survey to see what in my existing trailer was effective and what needed improving. Over several questions, I asked if my trailer fit forms and conventions of my chosen genres and the postmodern theme to which over 80% agreed that it did. In open questions, I asked what could be improved in my rough cut, to which many of my audience suggested improvements in music and editing. Since I had not yet added music to my rough cut, my audience suggested that I create a soundtrack appropriate to the action and events portrayed in the trailer. This can be seen in my final trailer since I used GarageBand to find suitable loops and incorporated them into my plot. One form of editing that was also improved was in the flashbacks, my audience suggested that I use a different coloured tint to further distinguish between the two time periods since it was not clear enough. I followed this by changing my tint from an ash colour to a more orange sepia tone which was deemed more effective. From my audience feedback of my rough cut, I learnt what could be done to my trailer in terms of improvement. This allowed me to alter my production to better meet the expectations of my target audience.

Music Research

Transcript: For my music research, I asked questions about what style of music I should use in my production. My audience watched my rough cut beforehand so that they had an idea of what my trailer was about and therefore had a better understanding what the music should be like to match my genre and style of video. I asked my audience about the type of music they expected with many agreeing on a piano-based soundtrack with 3-4 instruments that would rise and dip when appropriate. I also asked about the form to see what my audience thought would fit best with real media conventions and chose to start and end my music at the times that the majority answered with. From my audience feedback, I was able to learn about what my audience wanted to hear in my production, this meant I could then create a suitable soundtrack that was more likely to match the visuals in a way that the audience expected.
